The Trouble of the Tongue is a translation of a section from the work Ihyau l-Ulum al-Din, by the great Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali (may Allah have mercy on him). It examines the afflictions and diseases of the tongue, which are the most significant cause of every person s descent into Paradise or Hell. It discusses twenty types of tongue diseases and the dangers posed by the tongue, and offers methods for their diagnosis and treatment. It also addresses the disease of inappropriate, unnecessary, and excessive speech, which is the most prevalent affliction among modern people. Hakan Öner meticulously translated the work, with the sources of all the hadiths cited, and the necessary footnotes and explanations added to the book. While the tongue is a great blessing, it is also a danger that can lead to terrible disasters. Like all blessings, the tongue must be used in accordance with the will of God Almighty, the Giver of the blessing. Many people may think they have already fulfilled this condition. However, Imam Ghazali reveals the devil s hidden weapons and demonstrates that escaping the ravages of the tongue is not as easy as we think. In his work, the great Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali (may God have mercy on him) beautifully describes the death that people will inevitably experience, the life in the grave, the apocalypse, and the final destination: Paradise and Hell.
