The adventure of Bayrampaşa, which is among the 39 districts of Istanbul today, on its way to becoming a district dates back to 1927 In 1927, a few immigrant families from the city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria laid the foundations of Bayrampaşa. These families settled in Numunebağ and engaged in viticulture and animal husbandry, which is why the town was named Sağmalcılar . The population of Sağmalcılar began to increase slowly with the new migrations from the Balkans, and the first mukhtar election was held in 1943. With the construction activities, industrialization and the demolition of shanty houses that began in Istanbul after 1950, Bayrampaşa showed a tendency to evolve into an industrial zone; factories began to rise on one side of the city and housing began to rise on the other. Especially after 1955, the expropriations made on Vatan and Millet streets and the determination of the town as an industrial zone by the Istanbul Municipality of the period brought about a great population explosion. In 1960, with the wave of migration from Yugoslavia to our country, the town began to grow even more and subsequently, Muratpaşa, Kartaltepe and Yıldırım neighborhoods were established. Bayrampaşa, which had a population of approximately 125 thousand in the 1970s, is today an important center of life with 11 neighborhoods and a population of 300 thousand. The majority of the population of Bayrampaşa consists of Anatolian and Balkan people. Bayrampaşa, which was a town affiliated to Eyüpsultan until 1990, gained district status in 1990. Before 1990, Emin Nihat Sözeri, Muzaffer Öztekin, Sabri Akpınar, Mehmet Barış, Rahmi Baysal, Mehmet Akalın, Eyüp Uçak, Kadir Akpınar and Necdet Özkan served as mayors. After 1990, Necdet Özkan became the first mayor of Bayrampaşa, which gained district status, and Hüseyin Bürge and Atila Aydıner served as mayors. On March 31, 2024, Hasan Mutlu was elected as the new Mayor of Bayrampaşa by receiving 46.67 percent of the votes in the local elections. Bayrampaşa Mayor Hasan Mutlu, who took office with the slogan Our job is our strength, Bayrampaşa , works tirelessly to make the district more livable and develop it, and is greatly appreciated for his work.
