40TH INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL BOOK FAIR IS COUNTING THE DAYS TO MEET ITS READERS

The International Istanbul Book Fair, the most established literary gathering of our country, has been organized by TÜYAP Fair Group for 40 years since 1982. The fair has brought together 15 thousand publishing houses and non-governmental organizations with more than 12 million readers so far this year.
This year's Writer of Honor of the fair, where hundreds of publishing houses and thousands of writers meet with readers, which started in 1987 with the selection of Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca as the first Writer of Honor and honors valuable literary figures every year, was determined by TÜYAP Culture Fairs Advisory Board as Prof. Dr. Nermin Abadan Unat, who has many titles such as writer, translator, jurist, sociologist, political and communication scientist, one of the pioneers who contributed to the formation of communication sciences in Türkiye.
During the fair, various panels and interviews will be held on Unat's life and works with her participation. In addition, a memoir focusing on the life and works of the author will meet with the readers. The main theme of the fair is “Long Live the Republic” in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Republic.  In line with the theme, within the scope of the 100th Anniversary Events, there will be interesting interviews on the century's poetry, short stories, children's and youth literature, novels, essays-criticism and publishing, and valuable writers will come together with readers and share their ideas.
Karine Pansa, President of the International Publishers Association (IPA), will also attend the opening ceremony and will then speak at a talk on Developments in Publishing.

More than 400 cultural events will be held
The Istanbul Book Fair, which will host valuable publishers, authors and readers from Türkiye and abroad, will be established in 10 halls and a total area of 40 thousand square meters. 998 publishing houses and non-governmental organizations from Türkiye and abroad will participate in the fair, more than 400 cultural events and more than 2000 author signing days will be organized. More than 500 thousand visitors are expected to attend the fair.

Illustrators Meet Publishers
On Wednesday, November 1, the 'Illustrator and Publisher Meeting' will be held and the meeting will be open to the participation of all children's and youth publishers and illustrators. Within the scope of the event, publishers and illustrators will come together and will be able to present their portfolios directly to publishers and have the opportunity to promote their work.

Publishers from abroad participate
Within the scope of the fair, the international hall, which will be open between 28-31 October, will feature publishing houses from North Macedonia, Germany, China, Romania and Iran this year. These publishing houses will share information about the state of the publishing market in the relevant countries with the interviews they will organize in the interview area that will take place in the international hall.

The focus market country has become India
İlhan Ersözlü, General Manager of TÜYAP Fairs Production Inc., said that "India" has been determined as the focus market country for 2023 at the Istanbul Book Fair, which creates international meeting opportunities in our literary world. Stating that they are preparing to host publishing houses from India at the Fair, Ersözlü said: “In addition to this, publishers from 15 different countries will hold one-to-one meetings with the representatives of participating publishing houses and exchange royalties within the scope of the ‘Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Project to Support the Expansion of Turkish Culture, Art and Literature Works’, which is carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and whose short name is ‘TEDA’. On Sunday, October 29, 2023, a panel will be held with publishers from India and Turkish publishers, and ideas will be shared on increasing copyright exchange between the two countries."
The fair, which is free of charge for students, teachers, children, retired and disabled people, can be visited between 10.00-19.00 on weekdays and 10.00-20.00 on weekends. About Nermin Abadan Unat:
Born in Vienna, Nermin Abadan Unat graduated from Izmir Girls' High School in 1940 and then from Istanbul University Faculty of Law in 1944. After working at Ulus Newspaper in Ankara for a while, Abadan Unat entered the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University as the first female assistant, and received her doctorate in 1955 with her thesis titled "Public Opinion and Sphere of Influence". In 1958 she was appointed associate professor of political science and in 1962 professor. Nermin Abadan Unat, who founded the Chair of Political Behavior at SBF, has focused on the problems related to Turkish emigration since 1963, in addition to political sociology and mass communication, and has carried out various researches in Türkiye and abroad. She published books and articles in Turkish, German and English on this subject. The author, who is also interested in women's studies, represented Türkiye in the Commission on Equality of Women and Men of the Council of Europe between 1978 and 1999. The author, who has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University for many years, gave part-time lectures at Boğaziçi University until 2016.
Nermin Abadan Unat, who gave lectures as a guest professor at various universities in Europe and the USA, served as the second president of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) between 1967-1970 and the general president of the Turkish Social Sciences Association between 1978-1982. Abadan Unat, who served as a contingent senator in the Turkish Grand National Assembly between 1978 and 1980, was awarded the High Merit Award by the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1978, Women of Enlightenment in 1998, Fullbright Lifetime Academic Service in 2000, Kültür University's Woman with a Heart in 2004, Marmara Lifetime Achievement in 2006, the Istanbul Beşiktaş City Council Honorable Life Award in 2010, METU Great Service Award in 2011, Vehbi Koç Foundation Education Award in 2012, Bodrum Association for Supporting Contemporary Life Award in 2014, IU Women's Research Center Award in 2015, Ankara Mülkiyeliler Union Mülkiye Grand Prize in 2016.
